Christian Kroll
Founder, Ecosia
Christian Kroll is the visionary founder and CEO of Ecosia, the world’s largest not-for-profit search engine dedicated to environmental sustainability. Founded in 2009, Ecosia is not just any search engine; it is a green initiative that channels its profits into reforestation projects worldwide. The certified B Corporation has planted over 200 million trees across 19 reforestation sites globally. In 2018, Ecosia gave away shares to the Purpose Foundation to ensure its founders can never take profits out of the company or receive dividends. By July 2020, Ecosia had surpassed 100 million trees planted in total, resulting in over 50,000 metric tonnes of CO2 being removed from the atmosphere each month. By June 2022, Ecosia had planted over 150 million trees. It was reported in the same month that Ecosia, on average, was able to fund a tree planting every 0.8 seconds – averaging 75 per minute or 108,000 per day – with the revenue it generates from advertising.
